I've been involved in a discussion about ICE33 on the appdeploy forums. Would you mind reading through it and either posting up or consider writing something specifically for ICE33? Thanks much!!

If you normaly perform a silent installation, the UAC Prompt will not appear and thus the installer will not get any privielges to install. This will cause your installation to fail. So the only way to run the installer silently is by assigning it to the system through Group Policy (AD)or some other distribution tool such as SMS or Tivoli.

I would not recommend rebooting from within your installer. Instead, it is recommended that you install your product and the system files (if these are protected by Windows Resource protection, they will not install) together and trigger a reboot at the end. In Windows Vista, the msi engine uses Restart Manager to perform a reboot if it encounters a locked file. In other words if a restart is not needed, it will not be triggered. You can however force a reboot if you want to.

When you say "Elevation prompt is not displayed during a silent installation or upgrade." does this mean that actions requiring elevation do not prompt the user? Or does it mean that anything requiring elevation fails outright?

I have an installer situation in which I need to install some system files, reboot, then install our product. Is there a way to perform this with only an initial UAC prompt, but no prompt after a reboot? We've tried using the HKLM\RunOnce key, however the Windows UI does not display until after the installation completes (we would like it to appear). Using HKCU\RunOnce allows the UI to appear, but poses an additional UAC prompt.

When you say "Elevation prompt is not displayed during a silent installation or upgrade." does this mean that silent installations automatically elevate? Or that a silent install requiring elevated privileges will always fail?

I have a situation in which our installer updates system files, reboots, and then installs our application files and registers certain DLLs (also requiring elevation). Is there a way to have our installation continue after reboot without an additional UAC prompt?
